Many areas in Valley faced severe power cuts as distribution lines were snapped due to the snowfall.
The lines were damaged at many places forcing the Power Development Department (PDD) to discontinue the power supply.
PDD officials said many rural areas experienced extended power disruption.
The residents of many areas in Srinagar city also complained of longer duration power cuts due to the snowfall.
Local residents of majority of the parts of Srinagar complained of no electricity or frequent power cuts. The areas which were hit include Batamaloo, Bemina, Karan Nagar and some pockets of downtown.
The outskirts of Srinagar including Nowgam, Kanipora and Kralpora also faced electricity cuts. “There is no electricity in our area from last night. The transmission line was snapped and it has not been repaired,” said Farooq Ahmad, a local resident of Batamaloo.
While electricity was restored in Srinagar city till late evening, the power supply remained disconnected in rural parts of Shopian and Kulgam.
Chief Engineer PDD, Shahnaz Goni, told Kashmir Post that there are no major damages because of the snowfall.“There was a load of 800 Mw, which is not bad,” she said.
However Goni said in South Kashmir, especially Shopian, some lines were damaged due to which the power supply remained disrupted. “Our teams are working on it and hope they will restore the power supply by tonight,” she said.
Goni said the department is assessing the damage to the transformers. “I have not received the report about the number of transformers that have got damaged. I have sought the details from the concerned staff,” said Goni.
Asked about the preparedness in the event of heavy snowfall, Goni said the power infrastructure has been upgraded in comparison to previous years. “Our staff is geared up for the job,’’ she said.
